History

The Food Mill was founded in Oakland in 1933, during the Great Depression, as the city's first natural foods store. It began as a grain milling business and soon became a gathering place for local farmers who brought grains, nuts, and fresh and dried fruits directly to the mill.

These relationships helped the shop build a reputation for quality products and service. Long before "natural" and "organic" became common terms, The Food Mill was based on the belief that everyone should have access to wholesome, nutritious food.

As interest in natural health grew, The Food Mill expanded its selection to include herbs, vitamins, nutritional supplements, organic foods, and specialty products. It continued to focus on quality products, knowledgeable service, and helping customers find trusted wellness products.

Today, The Food Mill is a second-generation family-owned business. Its owners describe themselves as "caretakers" of more than 90 years of history.

The store also launched its website, thefoodmill.com, to allow customers who have moved away from California to continue shopping there from across the country.

Economy and Changes Over Time

Oakland has changed significantly over the past 90 years. Its neighborhoods have changed, the city has become more diverse, and people's shopping habits have shifted.

The owners have watched generations of families grow up shopping at The Food Mill. They say "it's always special" when longtime customers return with their children and grandchildren.

Since 2020, the business has faced rising costs for products, freight, insurance, utilities, and wages, along with supply chain disruptions and product shortages. These challenges have made it harder to maintain quality while keeping prices affordable.

The Food Mill also faces competition from large online retailers and changing shopping habits. Rather than trying to compete by size, the owners focus on knowledgeable staff, carefully sourced bulk foods, personalized service, and relationships with customers.

Community

The community remains an important part of The Food Mill. Everyday interactions with customers have helped shape the store's values, and the owners appreciate being part of family traditions across generations.

As more independent businesses disappear, The Food Mill hopes to remain a place where customers feel welcome, ask questions, discover new products, and connect with their neighborhood.

Although Oakland has changed over the decades, the owners believe its appreciation for local businesses and the people who run them has remained constant.
